Language Arts
Reading
We will start out the year looking at the differences between fiction and non-fiction text. Informational text is set up very differently from chapter books and picture books. We will look at the features of informational text and why it is important to pay attention to the features, such as photographs, caption, and graphs.
Writing
We will begin the year looking at events in our lives that we can write about and how to start a story to grab the readers attention. In the beginning of the year, we are building our writing stamina. We try to write a little more each day.
Working with Words
In working with words, we will study patterns and rules to help us become better at figuring out how to spell a word. They will take a pre-test of high frequency words to decide what words will be put on the word wall.
Self-Selected Reading
Each day students will have time to read books of their choosing. We will start each Self Selected Reading(SSR) time with a read aloud. We will start out the year learning how to choose books that are "just right" for them. The students will keep track of what they are reading in a book log and will be doing some writing about they are reading. Our goal for the year is to read 40 books!
